What a wonderful world. So many places to go ‘ah’ for, and then there is Cape Town.
And then all else pales in the vibrancy of colour, of light, of happiness. The mountain that welcomes the sea. Hard to describe, easy to live in. That is Cape Town. Voted the best city in the world on numerous occasions, but one reads and one forgets. Until you experience her, and then you never forget her. She will draw you in, and draw you back.
Its the good life, all in one place. The inner city bursts with cafe life, open windows, pavement music, designer fare. The V & A mecca for shopping, restaurants, sitting in the sunshine overlooking Mandela’s Robben Island. Life on the beach, life in the Malay quarter, life on Kloof and Long Street. Always open to new things, always trendy and the African beat is present for you to amble by, then bop by, then find yourself immersed in the culture, the freedom and the rhythm of life here. There is much to see, and all too intoxicating in Cape Town.
If good coffee is your habit, look no further than the best baristas with a flair for the sunshine vogue. If tourist hubs are your thing, on offer, but if smelting into the easiness of how life can be, take the detour. To the Biscuit Mill, the Twelve Apostles, go to Kirstenbosch and the Mamba walk. Dining is a fusion of fantasy, just the way you want it. And then, time to take in the Boulders, the Penguins … and you can say … I was there.
So rare to find a city enveloped in Natural landscape, with sea, mountains, Fynbos and Winelands within a stone’s throw of each other. One minute you may be photographing Baboons at Cape Point, and another sipping some of the best Chardonnay in the world. Or Pinotage, unique to South Africa – got to get one of those glasses of red! It’s all about colour here, and the light. Vibrant colour at sunrise and sunset – the type that warms you, invigorates you, nurtures you and inspires you. History that is real. People that are genuine. Taste, feel, touch, hear and smell. No wonder South Africans are voted the happiest people on earth and this is saying something despite the politics.
I know where I want to be for Sunday lunch. Sitting on a wine farm, good food, great company and a view that goes on forever.
Mama said to travel – and Cape Town is a city that offers the best beaches, the sea, the mountains and vineyards in one fell swoop. She beguiles you, tempts you, takes you to another place. She makes one happy to be alive.
Not enough time to applaud here, so being there, with all her possibilities, is enough.
Go there – you owe it to yourself. And you will never be the same again.
